What is Powder Coating?

Powder Coating is an advanced method of applying a decorative & protective finish to a wide range of materials and products that are used by both industries and consumers.  The powder used for the process is a mixture of finely ground particles of pigment and resin, which is sprayed onto a surface to be coated.  The charged powder particles adhere to the electrically grounded surfaces [much like dust sticks to your television screen] until heated and fused into a smooth coating in a curing oven.   The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality and attractive finish.  Powder coating is the fastest- growing finishing technology in North America, representing over 10% of all industrial finishing applications.

What kind of parts can be Powder Coated ?

Virtually any metal part can be coated: aluminum, steel, titanium, etc… Some questionable metals are magnesium and aluminum castings due to the chemistry.

Is Powder Coating better than liquid paint ?

Yes, powder coating gives consumers, businesses and industries one of the most economical, long-lasting and most color-durable quality finishes available.  In addition powder coating is thicker!   Typically 3-4 mils and paint is 1-2 mils. The thickness of the powder coating makes it more resistant to chipping, scratching, fading and wearing than other finishes.  Powder coating is versatile and can be used on springs without cracking the coating. You can’t do that with paint!

What colors are available ?

Color selection is virtually unlimited with high to low gloss, metallic and transparent finishes available.  Textured selection are also available in a range from smooth surfaces to wrinkled, and vary from matte to rough finishes to help hide flaws and imperfections in the metal.

Can parts be coated with a clear Powder Coating ?

Of course, there are several clear powder coatings available from semi gloss to high gloss. The clear powder coating works great on polished parts eliminating the need to keep polishing your parts. And best of all, the clear powder coatings outlast liquid clear coatings.

Is Powder Coating better for the environment than liquid painting?

Powder Coating is highly protective of our environment.  While liquids finishes contain solvents which have pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), powder coating contains no solvents and release negligible amounts, if any, of VOC’s into the atmosphere.  Thus, making powder coating the most “Green” choice!
